I started riding 4yrs ago. I had a dream as a child to ride a horse through an open field in Scotland. I thought I should make sure I could do that at 53. There’s a big difference in riding at 20 – the last time I’d been on a horse – and 53
I met Sam when I decided to take lessons. She is a wealth of knowledge and it shows in her instruction. She is gentle in her instructions, but firm in her expectations. In her instruction she tells you the why of the action. She shows you the how. She corrects where needed and celebrates your accomplishments no matter how small you may think them to be. She makes you want to be a better rider, and she ensures the care and wellbeing of you and your horse.
Oddly enough, my favorite lesson from Sam wasn’t in the saddle. It was while grooming a particularly stubborn mare who stole my heart. That mare fought me tooth and nail in picking her hooves! I got two out of four done and felt defeated. One more than the last time I groomed her, but still not all four. “Strive for 1% improvement. 1% improvement is success. If you get 1%, it’s a good day. “. I carry that simple lesson from Sam into every aspect of my life now.
Since that first day, my first lesson, I have grown as a rider, and now owner of my own horse. Sam helped me find the right horse for me and my skill level. She insured my safety while taking my goals into consideration. I owe my growth as a rider and peace in my world to her. My journey is ever evolving, but this part of my world centers me.
I cannot recommend Sam in her instruction, or The Salty Mare in their stables and services more highly. If you want to learn from the best, you go to the best. Sam and The Salty Mare are the best! – Billie H.
